Ballmer suggests Microsoft Surface pricing: $300 to $800

Microsoft has so far neglected to reveal pricing for its Surface tablets. In a recent interview with The Seattle Times on Friday, however, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer hinted at the pricing ballpark: $300 to "$700 or $800," quelling rumors that the Surface RT would sell at the bargain price of $199.

The Times managed to coax the pricing expectations from Ballmer by asking if Microsoft was planning to compete against the iPad on price or on features. The answer, it seems, is features: Ballmer noted that when companies make tablets to be cheaper "they do less. They look less good, they're chintzier, they're cheaper." His example was the $199 7-inch Kindle Fire, which is not good enough to do homework on.

$300 to $800 or $800 is "the sweet spot" for the PC market, according to Ballmer. While that may seem like a huge range, it's reasonable considering there are two versions of the Surface. The Surface RT should be priced closer to the iPad and Android tablets, while the Surface Pro goes up against Ultrabook laptops.

With most popular 10-inch tablets priced between $449 (e.g., the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2) and $499 (e.g., the 16GB iPad), a $300 starting price for the Surface RT is still very aggressive—even if it's not the amazingly low price of $199.

A $700 or $800 Surface Pro tablet PC would also be very competitive against current Ultrabook prices. It was only a few months ago that Lenovo broke the $800 Ultrabooks price barrier. The Surface Pro also has a lot going for it: a super-thin 0.53 inch thickness (compared to many Ultrabooks measuring about 0.8 inches thick) and about half the weight of competing 4-pound Ultrabooks. You'll have to make due with the tablet's small 10.6-inch HD display for that ultraportability, but you'll get the full computing power of a laptop with detachable keyboard cover.

The line between tablet and laptop is definitely blurring, Ballmer pointed out in the interview. Windows 8, with its touchscreen capabilities, is a major driving force behind the many hybrid PCs about to flood the market.

Microsoft Surface RT tablets are due to take on the tablet and laptop competition on October 26 and the Surface Pro 90 days after that.

U.S. Tops World in Music Pirate Downloads

Americans downloaded some 96.7 million music files from the BitTorrent file sharing network during the first half of the year, according to a report from Musicmetric, an online music analytics firm.

BitTorrent contains both legal and illegal files, but most of the music downloads identified in the study are not legally available on the network, Musicmetric said in a statement.

The United States topped all nations in unauthorized music downloads during the period, Musicmetric reported, followed by the United Kingdom (43.3 million), Italy (33.2 million), Canada (24 million) and Brazil (19.7 million).

There was both good news and bad news in the report for the music industry. The good news was that for the first time since 2004, record companies' digital music revenue growth in 2011 increased over the previous year, to eight percent, compared to five percent in 2010.

The bad news is that efforts to cripple one of the largest illegal download sites on the Web, Pirate Bay, hasn't had much effect on the illegal downloading scene. "For the first time, we have evidence that blocking Pirate Bay had little effect on BitTorrent downloading," Musicmetric CEO Gregory Mead said in a statement.

"It is also clear however, that availability of streaming services like Spotify does reduce this activity as people have greater access to music they want via legitimate means," he added.

In its report, which Musicmetric touted as the most in-depth study ever done on the global digital music landscape, the metricticians maintained that there is a demand for legal downloads that has been untapped on BitTorrent.

The U.S. tops the charts for BitTorrent downloads according to research by online music analytics firm Musicmetric.

As an example of that, they cited the success of The Cardigan EP by Billy Van. That tune, which is licensed for distribution via BitTorrent, is the number one torrent in five of the top 20 download nations. "It has become hugely popular in place of other illegal content in a quarter of the top 20 countries for downloads," the report noted.

While finding ways to monetize file sharing will be challenging, Mead acknowledged, it will be worthwhile for rights holders to do so. "The potential for converting revenue lost through file trading is not entirely a fairy tale, however it will differ with different genres and life stages of [an] artist," he said.

Added BitTorrent Executive Director Matt Mason: "It's short-sighted to think that we can simply tell people to stop and they will."

"The challenge is building the right business models on top of the technology, which is something we're very committed to here," he said.

Over the last two years, rights holders have done more than just "tell people to stop." They've sued some 200,000 BitTorrent users for pirating the rights holders intellectual property.

Judging from the volume of BitTorrent traffic reported by Musicmetric, those lawsuits don't seem to have made much of a dent in file-sharing traffic. What's more, they may not be very economical either. In 2007, for example, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) spent $17.6 million on lawyers chasing infringers only to recover $391,000 for its efforts.

Samsung Galaxy S IV tipped for February 2013, says report

Samsung is looking to derail sales of the iPhone 5 by launching a new Galaxy smartphone just nine months after the Galaxy S III, according to unnamed company officials quoted by The Korea Times. The phone would feature an even larger display at around 5 inches, and is expected to be announced during the Mobile World Congress expo in Barcelona in February next year, hitting shelves a month later.

The Samsung Galaxy S IV would increase the display size to 5-inch, up from the 4.8-inch display on the S III, topping the 4.3-inch display on the S II, which in turn was bigger than the 4-inch display on the original Galaxy S. Samsung already sells the Galaxy Note II with a 5.5-inch display. With the iPhone 5, Apple increased the iPhone display size for the first time from 3.5-inch to 4-inch.

Speculation over the announcement comes days after Apple unveiled the iPhone 5 and pre-orders of the device reached 2 million in the first 24 hours of availability – twice the number the iPhone 4S achieved last year. "iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. Pre-orders also skyrocketed over the weekend too, as AT&T said the iPhone 5 is "the fastest-selling iPhone the company has ever offered." The first iPhone pre-orders should arrive on September 21.

Since the iPhone 5 was announced, Samsung has promoted heavily its Galaxy S III. First, Samsung began to run a newspaper ad strangely comparing the S III to the iPhone 5. Now, if the Korea Times report is accurate, Samsung is looking to make the S III obsolete by launching the Galaxy S IV only nine months after its predecessor. Sales of the Galaxy S III have reached more than 20 million worldwide in three three months to September, and Samsung said it expects this to rise to 30 million by the end of the year.

What do hard drive-related words like SATA, IDE, and RAID actually mean?

Brainout asked the Hard Drives, NAS Drives, Storage forum to explain some of the words used to describe hard drives and storage.

Technical terms can get overwhelming, especially when they include too many TLAs (three-letter acronyms). Even people who use these terms sometimes need to step back and remember what they're talking about.

So here are some of the most common labels for the technologies used to store data inside your computer:

HDD: Hard disk drive. A magnetic, mechanical device that's been the primary internal storage device for more than a quarter century.

Flash RAM: Silicon chips that, unlike other types of RAM, can hold data without an electric current--a feature that makes them useful for storage. (RAM stands for Random Access Memory.)

SSD: Solid state drive. Flash memory packaged in an HDD-like form factor, to be used in place of a hard drive. SSDs are generally faster than HDDs, use less power, and are less likely to be damaged by a fall or shock. They also cost much more per gigabyte.

Partition: A section of a hard drive (or SSD) that appears to the operating system as a separate, independent drive. People use multiple partitions to run more than one operating system, or to separate programs from data. Most major-name Windows PCs come with a special recovery partition containing the files needed to restore Windows.

SATA: Serial Advanced Technology Attachment. The current standard technology for connecting a hard drive or SSD to the rest of the computer.

IDE: Integrated Drive Electronics. The older standard that SATA replaced.

RAID: Redundant Array of Independent Disks. Two or more drives working together to enhance performance or redundancy. For instance, in a RAID 0, two drives work as one larger and faster drive--faster because twice as many drive heads are reading data simultaneously. In a RAID 2, two drives contain the exact same files, so that if one dies the other continues to work. Other configurations allow both speed and redundancy.

Google adds 'Do Not Track' to Chrome by year's end

Google has moved a step closer to making good on its promise to support "Do Not Track" in Chrome by the end of this year.

Chromium, Google's open-source project that feeds code into Chrome, released a build last week that includes the Do Not Track (DNT) privacy setting.

It's unclear how quickly the setting will be moved to the multi-channel build structure of Chrome itself. Google maintains three versions of Chrome: Dev, Beta and Stable, each succeeding version more polished than the last.

The Stable branch of Chrome is due for an upgrade: Google last updated the browser on July 30, when it shipped Chrome 21. The company usually upgrades Chrome every six to eight weeks, putting Chrome 22 on the horizon and Chrome 23, which is now in the Dev channel, up for delivery sometime in November.

In February, Google said it would add DNT support to Chrome after the White House said it would introduce new online privacy legislation in Congress.

Chrome joined other browsers, including Microsoft's Internet Explorer, Mozilla's Firefox and Apple's Safari, that already transmitted special information with every HTTP page request to tell sites the user does not want to be tracked by online advertisers.

Then, Google promised to add DNT to Chrome by the end of the year, but declined to spell out a time or describe how the browser would present the option to users. Google was the last major browser maker to commit to DNT.

In Chromium "23.0.1266.0 build 156627" or later, the DNT setting appears under the "Privacy" section of the browser's Settings screen.

To pull up the Privacy section, users must first click the "Show advanced settings..." link at the bottom of the page. Checking the box marked "Send a 'Do Not Track' request with your browsing traffic" switches on the privacy feature.

Jonathan Mayer, a graduate student in computer science and law at Stanford University, and one of two researchers at Stanford who created the HTTP header concept to signal a user's DNT preference, bemoaned the placement of the setting in Chromium.

Chromium puts the 'Do Not Track' setting under the Privacy section of its Settings screen. Expect Chrome to do the same.

"Good: looks like Do Not Track will be in the Chrome privacy preferences. Less good: have to click 'Show advanced settings...' to see them," Mayer wrote on Twitter last Thursday.

Chrome places the Privacy section of Settings in the same location, however.

Although browsers have, or will, implement DNT on their end, the crux is websites, which must enable it on their ends. Twitter is the largest online service, by far, to have implemented DNT.

A group composed of advertisers, browser makers, privacy advocates and others have yet to finalize the DNT standard. The Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C) standards-setting group has, however, decided that browser makers cannot set the DNT signal for users.

But a move by Microsoft has roiled the group.

In May, Microsoft announced that Internet Explorer 10 (IE10) would enable DNT by default. During Windows 8 setup, for example, DNT is automatically turned on if users accept the default settings offered during the operating system's setup. They can, however, switch it off during that setup process, or at any later time.

Google has said little publicly, but by the way it presents DNT in Chromium, it looks to be firmly in the off-by-default camp. Apple's Safari also leaves its DNT option unchecked.

Since May, members of the W3C group have debated whether websites should be required to honor IE10's on-by-default signal.

The controversy over IE10 and DNT was stirred again two weeks ago when developers of the Apache Web server software added a patch to ignore the DNT header when it is sent by IE10. According to U.K.-based Netcraft, Apache powers 55% of all active websites worldwide.

Two new Olympus PEN cameras put OM-D sensors in pocketable bodies

The Olympus PEN E-PL5 has a tilting touchscreen LCD.

Olympus's OM-D E-M5 is one of the best mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras we've reviewed in the past year, but it's practically the size of a full-on DSLR. If you're looking for the same kind of imaging capabilities in a more-compact camera, one of two new Olympus PEN models announced Monday might do the trick.

The Olympus PEN Lite E-PL5 is the higher-end of the two new interchangeable-lens cameras. The PEN E-PL5 has a physical mode dial, a tilting 3-inch touchscreen that can be adjusted up and down, and a removable screw-on handgrip. Those are three features that distinguish it from the lower-end Olympus PEN Mini E-PM2, which has no mode dial, a fixed touchscreen, and a built-in handgrip.

Both cameras offer the same 16-megapixel sensor and TruePic 6 image processor found in Olympus's flagship OM-D E-M5 mirrorless camera, but in much more compact bodies. At 4.3 inches wide, 2.5 inches tall, and 1.5 inches deep, the E-PL5 can fit in a jacket pocket with a pancake lens attached. The PEN E-PM2 is even thinner, measuring 1.3 inches deep.

The new cameras also boast extremely fast autofocus speeds, which is put to good use in each camera's "Touch AF" feature; you can simply touch subjects on the screen when framing photos or videos to have the autofocus system lock in immediately. In some brief hands-on time with each new model, the cameras were able to focus on a subject and capture an image within a fraction of a second of touching the LCD. That's a good feature for action shooters, as are the cameras' 8fps burst modes at full 16-megapixel resolution with focus and exposure locked at the first shot.

The PEN Mini E-PM2 lacks a mode dial and a tilting LCD.

Each camera lacks a built-in flash, but both come with an external flash that mounts onto the top-mounted hot shoe. The E-PL5 and E-PM2 have ISO settings that reach up to 25,600, 1080p video recording at 30fps, full manual exposure controls in addition to aperture- and shutter-priority modes, and RAW and RAW+JPEG shooting modes.

The new PEN cameras also have several bracketing modes with adjustable settings, including an exposure-bracketing setting, ISO bracketing, and flash-intensity bracketing. In addition to the full library of creative effects found in previous PEN cameras (which Olympus calls "Art Filters"), there's a new watercolor painting effect in the mix, as well.

Like the latest interchangeable-lens cameras from Samsung and Sony, the new Olympus PENs also feature a companion mobile app for sharing images and video directly to a mobile device, but the cameras don't have Wi-Fi capabilities built into the camera. Instead, the E-PL5 and E-PM2 have an interface that's optimized for use with Toshiba's FlashAir cards, which are separately sold SD cards with Wi-Fi connectivity. When used with a FlashAir card, the new cameras will allow shooters to offload images and video to mobile devices by using a free "Olympus Image Share" app for iOS and Android.

15mm/F8.0 lens.

Both cameras are due in October. The PEN E-PL5 will cost $650 for the body only or $700 as a kit with a standard 14-42mm zoom lens. The PEN E-PM2 will cost $550 for the body only or $600 as a kit with the same lens. The Olympus PEN series has a focal length multiplier of 2X.

60mm/F2.8 lens.

Two new lenses for the PEN series were also announced today, including an extremely compact lens that doubles as a lens cap for the camera. A new 15mm/F8.0 prime lens is built for street shooting in daylight, and it's small and light enough to make each camera feel more like a point-and-shoot than an interchangeable lens camera. It has a lever on the side of the lens that operates a sliding lens cover, which is why Olympus is billing it as a lens/cover combo. The second new lens is a more-traditional ; given that maximum aperture, it should be way more forgiving in low-light situations than the new pancake lens.

Olympus Stylus XZ-2 boasts unique features for the premium compact class

This holiday shopping season won't not be short of excellent premium point-and-shoot camera options. The latest model vying for a spot on your wish list is the Olympus Stylus XZ-2, a camera that offers a few things that you won't find in the rest of the premium compact field.

The XZ-2 has a 12-megapixel CMOS sensor and an F1.8 aperture at the wide angle of its 4X optical zoom lens (28mm to 112mm). Its predecessor, the 10-megapixel Olympus XZ-1, had a smaller CCD sensor and the the same F1.8 lens, but Olympus says the new camera has a newly developed wider aperture of F2.5 at the telephoto end of its zoom lens.

One significant addition to the camera's feature set is an adjustable 3-inch LCD touchscreen, which makes the XZ-2 the only camera thus far in the premium point-and-shoot class with a touchscreen interface. To make that touchscreen UI more useful, the camera has the same speedy autofocus system found in the company's PEN cameras, according to Olympus. That means it should react to touch input in order to focus and snap a photo in a fraction of a second.

The touchscreen isn't the only way to operate the camera, which is a plus. The XZ-2 has physical buttons, scroll wheels, and knobs for operating its manual exposure controls, aperture- and shutter-priority adjustments, and ISO settings up to 12,800.

The camera also has a twistable control ring that surrounds the lens barrel and provides quick access to manual focus and exposure controls. A switch on the front of the Stylus XZ-2 lets you adjust the ring in a way I've never seen before, as it lets you toggle between a free-scrolling control ring and one that locks into place at individual steps; the idea is that the free-scrolling feel is better for manual focus, while the "click" ring is more intuitive for dialing in aperture settings.

Along with 1080p video capture at 30fps, the Stylus XZ-2 also has a good mix of features for both hard-core and more casual photographers, including RAW and RAW+JPEG shooting modes; bracketing modes for exposure, white balance, flash intensity, and ISO settings; a built-in neutral density filter; a dozen creative "Art Filter" effects; and a "Live Guide" interface that coaches shooters through aperture, shutter, and exposure-compensation adjustments. A hot shoe on the top of the camera is compatible with Olympus PEN flashes, eye-level viewfinders, and microphones.

Like the new PEN cameras announced today, the Stylus XZ-2 is also compatible with Toshiba's FlashAir Wi-Fi SD cards. Olympus optimized the in-camera interface to ease sharing images and video wirelessly, and a free "Olympus Image Share" app will allow peer-to-peer sharing between the camera and an iOS or Android device. The XZ-2 also comes with a removable handgrip that screws onto the side of the camera, much like the Olympus PEN E-PL5.

The Olympus Stylus XZ-2 is due in November for $600. That puts it in the same price range as Olympus's latest interchangeable-lens PEN cameras and the upper tier of premium point-and-shoots.

Ultrathin teardown! Asus ultrabook vs MacBook Air

Are Windows-based Ultrabooks built to the same engineering and manufacturing standards as Apple's now-legendary MacBook Air? We removed the shells from both an ultrathin Acer Zenbook Ultrabook and an Air to find out.

What we discovered were two machines with very similar internal design themes. And the similarities don't end there. Since Intel launched its Ivy Bridge processor, a host of Ultrabooks based on the new CPU have shipped. Meanwhile, Apple updated its MacBook Air lineup of ultrathin laptops with the new CPU as well.

Inside the dissection lab

Both the PCWorld and Macworld labs run real-world benchmarks, test subjective performance scenarios, and run hardware through a battery of tests to understand just how well products really work. And for this particular project, our two labs took apart a pair of the hottest laptops around. The actual disassemblies were performed by different tech experts. Tony Leung, PCWorld's lab manager, took apart the Ultrabook, while Jim Galbraith, Macworld's senior lab manager, handled the chore of pulling apart Apple's ultrathin Air.

The machines

The Ultrabook we dissected is the Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A, which certainly qualifies as ultrathin and ultralight. The MacBook Air we operated on was the 13-inch version, which compares well to the Zenbook, which has a 13.3-inch screen. The two systems are entry-level devices for their respective markets. The Zenbook ships with a Core i5 3317U CPU with a default clock frequency of 1.7GHz, while the Air uses a Core i5-3427u at 1.8GHz. Both have 4GB of system RAM and 128GB solid-state drives.

Both laptops required special tools to remove key screws. The Asus uses a Torx screwdriver, which is commonly available. However, Apple now secures its MacBook Air chassis with pentalobe screws, whose heads resemble Torx heads but are different enough that a Torx driver won't work.

Similarities and differences

Circuit board: The main circuit boards are roughly the same size. The MacBook Air's board layout is a little cleaner, but both are pretty clean by modern standards. The Zenbook seems to have more traces and connectors in its circuit board, though the differences are fairly minor. Oddly, we found bits of masking tape on the Asus board. The Air had no internal warnings, while the Asus PC had a sticker covering the SSD retainer screw that read "warranty void if removed."

Cooling: Both computers use very shallow fans offset to one side, with heat pipes transferring the heat. Asus has heat dissipaters on both the CPU and the I/O controller hub chip, while Apple uses one on only the CPU.

Hard drive: Both machines use MSATA solid-state drives. These look a little like memory modules, but the connector is on the short edge. The Asus uses an ADATA drive that has a thermal shield on one side, while Apple keeps all the flash memory chips bare. In both systems, the memory is soldered to the reverse side of the circuit board.

Battery: The batteries were strikingly similar, too. Both were 50-watt-hour sheet batteries composed of multiple cell sandwiches. The Asus battery actually had masking tape strips reinforcing the connection from the battery to the system, though this may have just been a leftover from the build process.

There are only so many ways you can build laptops this thin

We found many similarities in the internal designs of the Zenbook and the Air. Even the solid-state drives in the two machines are aligned in similar directions. You might think that Apple would be concerned about the similarities, given its predilection for protecting intellectual property. Nonetheless, when it comes to hardware design, the laws of physics trump everything. Whether we're talking about PCs or Macs, the layout and design of printed circuit boards tends to follow a specific set of rules in order to minimize trace length to ensure accurate timings. Most boards are laid out using automated tools, rather than drawn by hand. So maybe it's no surprise that the main board designs look so similar to nonengineers.

The most important and visible differences for users emerge via the design and usability of physical user interface elements—the design of the keyboard, pointing devices, and LCD panel. Perhaps even more important is the design of the user environment offered by a computer's operating system—and, in this regard, the user environments of the Zenbook and the Air are very, very different.

As different as Macs and PCs.

Laptops 2018: How future clamshells will respond to the touch revolution

The laptop as we know it is in the middle of an identity crisis.

After years of solid growth without any fundamental changes—aside from a quick, ill-fated flirtation with netbooks—the clamshell's relevance is now threatened by phones and tablets. The new breed of touchscreen mobile devices hasn't eliminated the need for PCs with trackpads and keyboards, but they have caused people to rethink whether they need a second notebook at home.

In response, PC makers are now ushering the laptop into the era of touch, with help from the drastic operating system overhaul that is Windows 8. The ride will be bumpy over the next few years, as PC makers try to generate excitement for laptops by introducing new hybrid designs, such as swiveling touchscreens and detachable displays.

But what happens after that? In five years, once the transitional hybrid period shakes out, what will the clamshell look like?

PCWorld spoke with chip makers, PC manufacturers, and analysts to learn more about what laptops will offer circa 2018. Join us as we peer into a multifaceted crystal ball to decipher the future of the notebook.

Refining the hybrid

As PC manufacturers ready the first round of Windows 8 laptop-tablet hybrids, they're willing to admit that their concepts are works in progress. Over time, they'll need to eliminate clumsy hardware compromises in the conversion from clamshell to tablet (and back again), such as awkward twisting motions, and the need to use two hands to detach a hybrid's display from its keyboard.

"Clearly, the ecosystem hasn't gotten [hybrids] right yet," says Kevin Lensing, AMD's director of notebook products. "They're interesting, but maybe a little bit hokey in their implementation."

Employing a swiveling screen design, Dell's XPS Duo 12 is a Windows 8 hybrid that doesn't immediately inspire build-quality confidence.

Lensing says that he's already seen some of the next-generation laptop-tablet hybrids from PC vendors, and their conversion mechanisms already look and behave better than those of the first wave of products. Some even gain processing power when the tablet is docked to a keyboard and trackpad.

Over time, Lensing expects docking to become more seamless, even as it adds power, storage, and extended battery. "We're in year one of a brand new mechanical design, and I think there's going to be multiple iterations of getting it to be just as robust as a real notebook," he says.

Mark VandenBrink, chief technical officer of HP's PC business, agrees that the next five years of hardware development will focus on reducing the clunkiness of the laptop-tablet hybrid. HP is no stranger to the category—the company's TouchSmart laptops appeared before Windows 8, and VandenBrink expects to see both good and bad designs as PC makers adjust.

"It's easy to do, but it's really, really hard to do well," VandenBrink says.

Even as convertibles begin their long process of evolution, there's still room for a major shake-up. Pat Moorhead, a tech industry analyst and consultant who specializes in future scenarios, believes that the modular PC concept will eventually go wireless. Smartphones could one day provide all the necessary storage and processing power, and the laptop may become little more than a dumb shell.

The software barriers to making this happen are already falling, Moorhead says, with operating systems such as Android and iOS designed to scale across screen sizes. He thinks that roadblocks in wireless technology could be demolished within five years as well.

The WiGig Alliance is already pushing for the use of spectrum around 60GHz, which would support speedy display connections and wireless docking. The challenge, Moorhead says, will be to get device makers to agree on a standard for wireless communication among devices.

But he's optimistic. "With the proliferation of very inexpensive large displays, it's going to be hard to walk into a room in the western world where you're not going to be able to connect to some sort of display," Moorhead says.

Moving beyond the trackpad and keyboard

The keyboard and trackpad aren't going away, at least not on the watch of the PC manufacturers I spoke with. But those old standbys may evolve in the next five years to grow alongside new input methods.

Mark Aevermann, a senior product manager at Nvidia, thinks that voice recognition, hand gestures, and even eye tracking could take off in the next five years. Relevant concepts are already kicking around now—Apple's Siri, Microsoft's Kinect, and Tobii's eye-tracking technology come to mind—and though they may now seem ill-equipped to supplant trackpads and keyboards, Aevermann recommends keeping an open mind.

"I think writing off any one device category or method of input or interaction is basically saying there aren't creative people out there," he says. "I think there are tons of people out there thinking about how to make the experiences more accessible."

As for the trackpad, HP's Mark VandenBrink sees room for improvement in a couple areas. Instead of trackpads consisting of a tiny square in front of the keyboard, VandenBrink envisions a dynamic trackpad that covers a lot more of the laptop's surface. He also sees potential for adaptive trackpads that learn your preferences and tendencies as you go.

We're already starting to see some innovation on the trackpad and keyboard front. Last month, Synaptics introduced a pressure-sensitive trackpad and a capacitive keyboard that is thinner and lets the user disable the cursor while typing. The trackpad on Intel's Nikiski concept, shown off at CES in January and pictured at the very top of this article, runs the length of the keyboard and uses palm detection to switch off during typing.

Moorhead offers some other far-out ideas for overhauling the trackpad and keyboard completely. Notebooks of the future, he imagines, could come equipped with two or more high-definition cameras, working in concert to track the user's hands. If the cameras become accurate enough, they could allow any surface to serve as a trackpad, as the cameras pick up the gliding of your hand and the twitching of your fingers, and the laptop's software translates that information into cursor functions.

The same possibility applies to keyboards. Moorhead believes that, with high-definition cameras on either side of the screen, any surface could become a virtual keyboard, with the screen showing a virtual keyboard overlay indicating where the user's fingers are landing.

Users may at first resist the idea of losing physical feedback from a trackpad, but Moorhead notes that the iPhone's touchscreen keyboard was pooh-poohed in its early days as well.

"The reality is you give [people] an alternative where there's a benefit, and you could potentially eliminate the entire keyboard deck," Moorhead says. He admitted, though, that this scenario is unlikely to become reality in the next five years.

More power for new ways of computing

Given the state of computing today, it's tempting to argue that most users don't need more processing power. Most modern laptops have no problem handling high-definition video, juggling lots of browser tabs, and playing games on Facebook or other websites. Unless you're a hardcore gamer or a creative professional with high-end photo or video software, current-generation processors are good enough.

The PC and chip makers I spoke with, however, believe that a new stage of computing is at hand. All of the burgeoning input methods mentioned earlier—particularly voice and gesture recognition—will require more processing power if they're to be be handled without any lag. Advances in video and screen resolution will demand more oomph as well.

Thanks to its glass trackpad, Intel's Nikiski concept actually reveals a portion of the screen when the clamshell is closed, providing access to basic apps.

Gary Richman, a director in Intel's PC Client Solutions division, sees even more opportunities coming to light in the next five years. He imagines that PCs will become more context-aware, enabling them to detect other nearby devices and interact with them automatically. He also believes that PCs will become more like personal servants that can perform tasks even when they're not directly in use. For example, a laptop might be able to grab a video from your camera, transcode it, and upload it even when it's resting in a laptop bag.

"Our goal is to be able to enable those things," Richman says. "We need good enough performance, which is pretty great compared to where we are right now."

AMD's Kevin Lensing sees two ways that the future of the PC may unfold: In one scenario, workloads don't change, and PCs become smaller, less expensive, and more commoditized. In a second scenario, new modes of computing require chip makers to focus on increasing processing power rather than on developing thinner and lighter machines.

"The key is, we've got to decide whether a new era of the PC is on the horizon," he says.

The argument for the traditional clamshell

Many of the experts I spoke with believe that hybrid devices will come to dominate the laptop market in the next five years. But that doesn't mean traditional laptops are going away. Users may still want to own a portable computer with a larger screen; and even if touch becomes standard across PCs, convertible devices may not work especially well with larger laptops.

"If you can do everything you can do with clamshell, in the same size, at the same cost, sure it's less interesting, but we have a long engineering road to go before we're at that point," Intel's Gary Richman says.

Around 2018, users will see a "bifurcation of devices," says AMD's Lensing. When users need more power than a tablet or hybrid can provide, they'll turn to laptops, but even those devices will be slimmer and more battery-efficient. He expects laptops that are thicker than an inch to all but vanish, except for high-end gaming rigs and design workstations.

"Much like people said desktops would go away, the traditional notebook is not going to disappear," Lensing says. "But the average device the user carries for basic everyday computing is likely to be a much thinner device—and potentially one of these no-compromise devices."

As Nvidia's Mark Aevermann points out, it's okay that no single mode of portable computing will completely dominate in the next five years. Though he thinks that low-cost tablets and hybrids will revolutionize the industry, Aevermann still sees plenty of room for a multitude of devices to survive, including the premium notebook.

"I do think this one-size-fits-all mentality is a thing of the past," he says, "and consumer choice is the way of the future."

As laptops work through their identity crisis, it's a comforting thought: Some things will change, but some things will always be the same.

Kindle Fire HD review: A big improvement from Amazon

The 7-inch Amazon Kindle Fire HD goes far to correct many of the issues that plagued Amazon's first foray into tablets nearly a year ago. The Fire HD also introduces several tech enhancements over competing tablets, and while in the end the Kindle Fire HD falls short of Amazon's goal of being the best tablet at any price, it does excel on many metrics—and at $199 for the 16GB version and $249 for the 32GB version, it delivers a strong, value-priced experience that's optimized for consuming stuff from Amazon.

How the hardware and software comes together is the key, and that's a big part of why Amazon has chosen to differentiate itself on its retail and Web services strengths. In so doing, Amazon diverges from the open and straight path of stock Android 4.0, which serves as the core of Kindle Fire HD's software. Instead, it veers in the direction of Apple's walled garden, but with more meandering paths in and out than Apple's fortress-like garden provides. That's perhaps the best way to describe the distinction, given Amazon's support for only a subset of the greater Android app universe, limited file handling abilities, and the way Amazon saddles the Kindle Fire HD with in-your-face advertisements (you can eliminate these for an extra $15).

The result is a tablet experience that will appeal less to experienced tablet users, and more to the casual newcomer who values consuming movies, TV, books, and music above a full-featured tablet. What Amazon succeeds in, though, is delivering a capable device with a 28 percent smaller display than Apple's 9.7-inch iPad, and it does so at 60 percent of the price. And for these reasons, the Kindle Fire HD may just be enough tablet to satisfy many shoppers in the coming holiday season.

Design refinements

Whereas the original, boxy Kindle Fire showed no inspiration, the Kindle Fire HD's design is more svelte and polished. Its corners are rounded, and the edges have an elegant yet subtle curve, giving the tablet a distinctive look. The back has a smooth, rubberized finish, with a decorative plastic accent running horizontally across it. At either side of the accent are the tablet's dual-driver, rear-firing speakers.

Surprisingly, while the Fire HD feels solidly constructed, it fails in two respects. There's a minute gap between the glass and the plastic around the edge, and this fingernail's width spacing is annoying catch-all for attracting dirt and crumbs in the course of everyday use.

Amazon adds physical volume buttons to the right-hand side of the tablet, with a flat power button beneath those. The volume buttons are a welcomed addition (the original Kindle Fire lacked this basic feature) though they are hard to find by feel. Furthermore, the power button has been redesigned, improving upon the raised power button on the original Fire, but now its awkward to press.

The front of the tablet has a wider-than-usual glossy black bezel, making it a little wider than comparable 7-inch tablets. It measures 7.6 by 5.4 by 0.4 inches, which makes it 14 percent wider than the Google Nexus 7, but makes it about as thick as the Nexus 7 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.

The Kindle Fire HD's weight is practically the same as before, and it's still on the heavy side for a 7-inch tablet. It's 16 percent greater than the Nexus 7, and while I find the Kindle Fire HD is fairly well-balanced and adequate for one-handed use, I prefer the lighter weight and narrower size of the of the Nexus 7.

Along the bottom edge of the display sits Mini-HDMI and Micro-USB ports. The Micro-USB is used for data transfers as well as charging. Amazon doesn't include its aftermarket power brick; that's a $20 extra-cost (and, sadly, requires more space than its small footprint belies, since the USB cable attaches on the side instead of the top of the power brick).

Cosmetics aside, the Kindle Fire HD's most visible improvement lies with its display. The Fire HD has a bright 1280 by 800 display with optical bonding. As on other tablets with bonded displays—including Barnes & Noble's Nook Tablet, Acer's Iconia Tab A700, Toshiba's Excite 7.7, and Google's Nexus 7—the process eliminates the pesky air gap that causes greater reflectivity and reduced contrast. That makes for clearer text and better colors.

In side-by-side tests, the display compares very favorably with the Nexus 7 and Excite 7.7. I prefer the color reproduction on the Nexus 7, though: Blacks are deeper, whites are whiter, and images look sharper. Mind you, some of that may be due to the Kindle Fire HD's software (more on that later). Text, reproduction, however, is universally better on the Kindle Fire HD, which may be attributable to Amazon's font optimizations in its operating system.

I'd say that these display enhancements alone make the $199 Kindle Fire HD a well worth the upgrade over the 1024 by 600, $159 Kindle Fire, especially for anyone who will to use a Kindle tablet for reading books, periodicals, and Web sites.

Performance: mostly fluid, but no speed demon

Amazon made some very bold claims about the performance of the Kindle Fire's dual-core 1.2GHz Texas Instruments OMAP 4460 processor as compared with Nvidia's Tegra 3 platform, which is found in the Nexus 7. In order to quantitatively measure the Fire HD's performance, we had to sideload our benchmark tests, simply because they weren't offered in Amazon's Appstore. While the benchmarks worked on Kindle Fire HD, it's not clear whether our mixed results had anything to do with any potential incompatibility with Kindle Fire HD.

In the benchmarks, Kindle Fire HD was positively slothlike on the Geekbench test, scoring a 510 compared with original Kindle Fire's 932 and Nexus 7's 1550. On AndEBench's native test, the Fire HD perked up, scoring 4311; that topped the first-generation Fire's 3462, but was notably slower than the Nexus 7's 8716. The Fire HD's performance was similarly positioned on the AndEBench Java test.

It was on our Web speed tests that Kindle Fire HD showed more signs of life. The Fire HD was statistically tied with the Nexus 7 on Sunspider, and it logged the second fastest time we've seen on our custom-built Web page load test., ending in a statistical tie with Samsung's Galaxy Note 10.1. (We tried BrowserMark, but it ran consistently and with oddities, so we're not counting it here.) Amazon says its updated Silk Web browser includes an new HTML 5 rendering engine, a refreshed start page, and both full-screen and vertical reading modes for text-heavy pages. Amazon says the browser is 30 to 40 percent faster, a range our custom Web page load test bore out, but not our Sunspider results.

On GLBenchmark, the Fire HD performed respectably, logging 33 frames per second on Egypt Offscreen, and 53 frames per second on Pro Offscreen. Those numbers were notable improvements over the first-generation Kindle Fire: 43 percent and 29 percent, respectively. And they are better than what we typically saw from tablets running Nvidia Tegra 2 , but not as good as what we've seen on Tegra 3 models. For comparison, Nexus 7 scored 64 frames per second on the Egypt Offscreen test, and 83 frames per second on the Pro Offscreen.

My real-world tests engendered only a few complaints. I sometimes experienced a bit of lag, especially when accessing cloud content, but that could just as well be on the server side as it is on the device's side. The Kindle Fire HD menus seem responsive, whether I was moving among apps, playing games, or opening up and fast forwarding through the high-definition movie The Hunger Games. Some Web pages did seem to take a while to load, and I could only load the mobile version; there's no option to view the desktop version of web pages in the browser. I saw some sharpness and rendering issues—and a weird screen blip—when viewing high-resolution images, but I believe these issues have more to do with the Amazon software than with the hardware.

In our battery life tests, the Kindle FIre HD didn't deliver on Amazon's estimates. The battery lasted 8 hours, 41 minutes, about 30 minutes less than Google's Nexus 7, but better than the previous Kindle Fire. The battery test plays a 720p video with Wi-Fi disabled, at 200 cd/m2 brightness.

Ultimately, I'd call my hands-on experience mixed, just like the benchmarks. Sometimes my experience was responsive, sometimes it stalled. Sometimes I'd open an app immediately, other times I'd see Amazon's spinning circle while I waited the extra few seconds for something to open. The Nexus 7 has the performance edge, but the Kindle Fire HD is ahead of a vast number of nameless $200 and less tablets, too.

For games, I didn't see many in Amazon's Appstore that were truly optimized with high-definition graphics at the time of my review. But I did load up Riptide GP and try it on Kindle Fire HD and Nexus 7. In terms of game performance, the experiences are close. Fire HD is highly competitive, but it lacks some finer shading in the water and the fancy splash effect that Riptide GP displays for Tegra 3 tablets like Nexus 7.

Superior sound

Interestingly, Riptide's soundtrack was the first sign that audio on Fire HD is a different experience than what I've heard from other tablets. Amazon talked up the fact that they have dual-driver stereo speakers on-board, and it mentioned it exclusively offers Dolby Digital Plus audio (technically, this Dolby technology isn't exclusive to Amazon; the company is just the first out of the gate). But until you truly hear the difference side-by-side, with an array of content, it's hard to appreciate what Dolby Digital Plus and improved speakers does for the Kindle Fire.

Dolby's new mobile platform, which brings the audio format introduced with Blu-ray to tablets, proves most effective on content that is in need of a fix to even out the frequency response. For example, I could hear more range in the game soundtrack on the Kindle Fire HD than on the Nexus 7. Same with music tracks from Lady Gaga, Owl City, and Mary Black. In an A/B with Dolby Digital Plus on and off, I heard instruments and strains of music that were not evident when the feature was turned off (it's on by default) . But an R.E.M. track didn't get as much benefit, simply because, Dolby said on hearing the track, it just didn't need as much help to begin with.

Overall, I was pleased with the audio quality, and found it to be one of the best tablets I've heard for audio output via the built-in speakers. My one complaint with the Fire HD's audio was that the volume level needed to be turned up high to be heard; granted, this is a common trait on other tablets, but I hold the Fire HD to greater scrutiny here just because Amazon clearly was paying attention to the audio, yet chose this lower volume level.

No movies at Amazon currently support Dolby Digital Plus, but Dolby expects releases to come shortly. Meanwhile, even the movies and TV shows I listened to benefited from the Dolby Digital Plus boost, in a way that I don't usually experience from audio enhancements on tablets.

Speaking of movies, HD movie playback is a mixed experience. By far, the Kindle Fire HD is superior to the original Kindle Fire. Less pixellation, better color and defintion to the image. That said, Amazon's streaming video still showed some artifacts in my use on several Wi-Fi networks. Amazon says HD purchases are streamed at the highest bitrate your network can handle, up to 6Mbps at 720p; this may account for my experience, but I without a doubt preferred the quality of downloaded video as opposed to streamed video.

As for the rest of the guts inside, Amazon had a few more component boosts up its sleeve. For starters, the company thankfully boosted the internal storage to 16GB for the $199 version. That's twice what the Nexus 7 offers, and the same amount as found on the Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet (2011). Add $50 for the 32GB version, which is twice what Google offers at that price. The 16GB model has 12.6GB of usable storage—certainly better than you got on last year's 8GB model, and a reasonable amount considering how easy Amazon makes it for you to store content in the cloud. If you plan to have lots of high-definition content, I'd suggest going with the 32GB version, though, since there's no memory card expansion slot on the Kindle Fire HD.

Hardware-wise, the new Kindle has a front-facing 720p camera and adds Bluetooth, which the original Kindle Fire lacked. Amazon says its Wi-Fi radio's design boosts performance significantly, but in my casual use I didn't notice any particular benefit.

However, the Kindle Fire HD lacks what are oft-considered standard inclusions for a tablet. There's no rear-camera (to be fair, the Nexus 7 lacks this as well), and no GPS for directions. Perhaps the omission of such features could be acceptable if the tablet were only targeting the value market, but Amazon claims that this is the best tablet at any price. Even the value-priced Nexus 7 has GPS and Google's Navigation features intact.

Software: Streamlined and visual OS

The first thing you'll see when you power on your shiny new Fire HD, in fact, will be an ad. And in their full-color, HD glory, the ads feel much more intrusive than the grayscale advertisements on the Kindle e-readers. The Kindle Fire HD's adverts annoyed me to no end. Tell me where to sign up to opt-out for $15 extra...that is possible, if you can find it buried amidst Amazon's options.

Amazon has spruced up its Kindle Fire OS with a noticeably improved interface. Let's start with the home screen: It's simpler, with a black background and large, bold icons in its carousel menu, each for recently accessed content. In the portrait mode, beneath the carousel your content will show recommendations of things other customers bought. I didn't like this being front-and-center, though: While I don't mind Amazon passing me suggestions, having those suggestions appear on my home screen is unappealing. I liked the new shortcuts to some apps; for example, directly from the home screen you can now launch a new mail message.

In the carousel, you get control over what's shown; if you don't want something there, you can tap and hold to remove something from the carousel, or to add it to your favorites list. This is buggy; items keep returning unbidden to the carousel, a glitch that Amazon says it will fix in a future update.

Favorites work fine; all you have to do is tap the star on the bottom right corner to access favorites anywhere on the device. If the content occupies the full screen, the nav menu now pops with home, back, search, and favorites now slides out from the right side, as opposed to popping up from the bottom.

Amazon streamlined and rejiggered the order of the top navigation bar to provide quick access to the Amazon store—now in the primary spot—as well as to books, apps, music, video, newsstand, docs in your Amazon CloudDrive, and more. (CloudDrive syncing was a bit wonky when I used it with my Windows CloudDrive app; Amazon is investigating the issue.) Amazon enhanced its notifications and settings shortcuts navigation to now be a pull-down shader, in the style of Google's Android notifications shade.

Streamlined and clean are the two running themes throughout the interface. Amazon's sans-serif fonts stand out for being smoother than those in stock Android 4.0 on the Google Nexus 7. Nowhere is this clearer than in the Kindle books section, where I found text sharper, with less aliasing on Game of Thrones than it was in the Kindle for Tablet app on the Nexus 7. The reading experience on Kindle Fire HD is vastly improved over the original Fire. Oddly, though, there's no way to adjust brightness directly from within the book app, as you can on Kindle app for Android tablet; and, there are no page numbers in sight.

It's not to say that Amazon's reimagining of Android isn't arcane at times. Or a misfire: The way images are presented in the Photos app looks cool when it interprets an image's rotation data correctly; but as you can see by the screenshot below, Amazon's software struggled with a folder full of mixed portrait and landscape images.

All of this said, Amazon has increased the functionality and practicality of the Kindle Fire HD as compared with its first tablet. For example, I can receive an attachment, open it, edit it in an app that supports the file type, save it, and then send out again—all from the tablet.

The new software has Facebook and Twitter integration, to make it easy to share passages of books. And with Facebook, you can also pull images down to your tablet, and share Amazon Gamecircle scores.

Meanwhile, Amazon continues to omit some basic built-in apps, like a to-do list or a notepad.

Ecosystem: Missing, messy apps

The Kindle Fire OS is now a custom skinning of Android's 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a notable jump up from its previous 2.3 Gingerbread roots. The update to 4.0 suggests Amazon will amass more tablet apps optimized for larger displays, and optimized for tablet, period.

Unfortunately, I could easily download apps that were not intended for my device at all, including apps for phones, for example. And content optimized for the high-definition screen is in scarce supply at launch. Amazon says it plans for users to find content by calling it HD, but it didn't reveal whether HD apps will be sortable by category. Doing a simple search on "HD" in the app store revealed a messy array of content, some repetitive and not much that was cutting edge or appealing.

And that's part of what you get with the Amazon Appstore on Kindle Fire HD. Like your music, video, and book content, you're buying into Amazon's retail ecosystem for your apps—and that means you're limited to the company's selection, which Amazon says is over 30,000. Compare that to Google's 600,000 apps in the Play store (not all of them made for tablets).

What Amazon does really well, though, is integrate the shopping experience—and cloud-based content—with your local content. In most instances, I found the experience cleaner to navigate than on Google Play.

Bottom Line

Without a doubt, the Amazon Kindle Fire HD's greatest appeal lies with those who tend towards mainstream, and less toward cutting-edge. Its strength lies with how the tablet has been integrated with Amazon's numerous and varied services; from shopping to streaming media to storing your documents in the cloud, Amazon has you covered.

One of the many problems with the first Kindle Fire was that it simply didn't do anything well. That's no longer the case. E-reading and music playback are both well-executed, and the e-mail capabilities are more functional than before. You're buying into Amazon's limited app ecosphere, though, so if selection and getting the latest apps are a primary concern, then a stock Android tablet would be a better choice. But for other tablet shoppers, the Kindle Fire HD is a reasonable way to test the tablet waters, while getting a color e-reader to boot.(If you prefer a larger screen, the $299 Kindle Fire HD 8.9-inch and the $499 Kindle Fire 8.9-inch 4G LTE + Wi-Fi are scheduled to ship November 20.)
