IT'S a thrillseeker's worst nightmare.

A theme park outing went horribly wrong in Spain when a British tourist, Jamie Norman, had his face smashed open while riding a waterslide at Aqualandia, in the resort of Benidorm.

He had been standing in a capsule 33 metres high and it was on his third go that things went wrong. The slide is designed so riders fall down the steep slide, through a trapdoor, and into the water.

But that's not what happened.

Instead a trapdoor failed to open all the way and Mr Norman fell through, crushing his face, legs and arm against it.

The 27-year-old told the The Mirror: "I could have been killed. If I'd been knocked unconscious I could have lost control and fallen and drowned in the pool. I took an almighty crack on my face."

Mr Norman knew something was wrong because the trapdoor didn't clonk when it opened like it had previously.

"As I fell I felt it scrape all down my legs and arms and then smack into my face. When I got to the bottom the pool was full of blood."

He told the newspaper that only 10 minutes after the incident the ride was back operating. He believed the staff were more interested in getting him out of the park.

"I was obviously quite distressed but they just said, 'We'll sew you up'. I was treated by an on-site doctor — they didn't bother calling an ambulance or anything.

"A guy turned up who said he was the second manager. He just offered me free tickets for the zoo as he ushered us to the exit."

The incident Mr Norman prompted him to rethink his attitude towards safety. Until now he thought standards in the United Kingdom were too strict but "over there it's something else".

"Just look at my face. How could they say that ride was safe? It ruined the holiday, I was covered in scabs, stitches and bandages."

A spokesman for Aqualandia told The Mirror they made "exhaustive checks" on all their equipment, each day.

"We would never open — or reopen — a ride that wasn't safe."
