WHEN The Voice coach will.i.am first met his Black Eyed Peas mate apl.de.ap, he approached the encounter with all the curious personality and charm which has engaged him to Australian TV audiences.

Moving to the US in 1999 as a child, after being adopted by the roommate of Will's uncle, the Philippines-born Apl says pop culture formed the foundation of their lifelong friendship.

"From the beginning, when I first got to the US, he'd say 'you're from the Philippines?' looking at me like I was from a fish tank,'' apl.de.ap, pronounced Apple Dee Ap said.

"He was like 'what do you do there?' I was like 'I break dance, I do the running man ...'

"And he was like 'what, you do the running man? Show it to me.'

"From then, we formed a dance group that evolved to being signed to Easy E and then came The Black Eyed Peas."

Now, the best friends have banded together again, with apl.de.ap to join The Voice as Team Will's mentor next Sunday.

The dynamic duo line up against new celebrity pairings on the Nine series, with Megan Washington returning to the role supporting Team Joel; DJ Havana Brown teaming with Ricky Martin's artists; and INXS saxophonist Kirk Pengilly joining Team Kylie.

The Peas newcomer, born Allan Pineda Lindo, is already a coach on The Voice in the Philippines, but relished the opportunity to share his experience with a new field of hopefuls.

"When you're a coach you get to be technical all the time, now I get to ask about their life stories, their struggles, who they are doing this for, the motivations,'' apl.de.ap said.

"It's been good, it's been fun.

"With will.i.am emerging as this year's fans' favourite, his band brother said the audience was getting the best snapshot of his friend's manic mind and production talents.

"He's Mr Analogy. He'll take a situation and turn it into some crazy analogy. It's very interesting, that's how he is 24/7. He doesn't stop, you just gotta keep up."

Washington, who was part of season one with Keith Urban, defended the program from those who have sledged its value as a star search series.

"Regardless of your opinion of the worth of reality television, it's been around for 10 years now and is an established, valid platform, if you want to, start that way,'' she said.

"Working within that paradigm The Voice is absolutely the most authentic and fairest method."

The battle rounds conclude tonight, with the mentoring episodes to air from Sunday when singers move through to showdown phase of the competition.

In each showdown episode, three singers on each team perform head to head - with their coach to decide who goes direct to the finals, who goes home and who must sing again to be saved.

In a world first, mentors will listen to each artist "blind", helping the coach to prepare each singer for their showdown performance.
